City council to vote on renaming skate park

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council will decide tomorrow whether to name a skate park after a well-known community member.

The Kiwanis Club wants to rename the "Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate Park" after former city councilman Ron Bonlender.

He helped to create the park and raised money to build it.

Bonlender died a year ago, and was a major advocate for community projects, especially in East Yakima.

"So, to have a resolution bringing that forward to honor him and his service, I mean we didn't always agree politically, but that's not what this is about. Ron was a good guy for Yakima and a big proponent of Yakima," said Yakima Mayor Micah Cawley.

The parks commission gave the okay for the name change in September, but the city council will have the final say at their meeting tomorrow night.
