PULLMAN, Wash. -

When news broke Monday morning that Washington State receiver Marquess Wilson had been suspended, many in the media – and many fans – thought they would know more as the day progressed. As it turns out, WSU has decided to keep things quiet.

Wilson reportedly walked out of a workout Sunday night, and for that reason he will not play in this weekend's game against UCLA. His future with the team is uncertain.

The suspension comes on the heels of the Cougars' worst loss of the season, a 49-6 beating at the hands of Utah on Saturday.

Wilson is WSU's all-time leading receiver in career yards and leads the Cougars this season with 52 catches for 813 yards.

Few players, let alone fans, saw this coming. Even quarterback Jeff Tuel did not know what Wilson did - or did not - do at a team workout on Sunday.

"I didn't find out until after," said Tuel.

A reporter then asked him what his initial reaction was.

"Disbelief," he said.

Coach Mike Leach said only that Wilson was suspended for violating team rules. He would not elaborate. Whether he has left the team, a rumor swirling through social media on Monday, is still up in air – even to Leach.

"I don't know," said Leach. "I do know that he is suspended. If he left the team that is his decision, but he is suspended. He is suspended for violating team rules and that's as far as we're going to go with it."
