Troopers warning drivers to drive defensively during Blue Bridge construction

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Washington state troopers are warning drivers to drive defensively as the other half of the Blue Bridge project begins tomorrow evening.

During the 6-day closure of the northbound lanes of 395, troopers reported 13 accidents, all directly related to the congestion caused by the extra traffic.

Troopers said many drivers are not paying attention, and then make rash movements trying to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

"Well a lot of it was inattention. A lot of it was people looking around trying to make a decision where they were going to go, being distracted by the change and not being prepared for that. It was interesting that most of those collisions occurred during the weekdays, we actually had very few during the weekends," said Mike Saunders, Washington State Patrol Lt.

Repairs on the southbound side begin Friday evening and are expected to last through next Wednesday morning.

Drivers will need to take alternate routes while the southbound lanes are closed.
