YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council has decided to pay the fire inspection bill for local small businesses.
Last week we told you about a "usage fee" plan the city was considering, but the mayor says they decided to take $175,000 from their reserve fund to pay for the program instead.
He says this is just a temporary way to pay for inspections.
"The council will have plenty of time between now and next year to figure out what the permanent funding option is going to be. It could be absorbed into the general fund, but that means something else may get cut," said Mayor Cawley.
Cawley says some council members were concerned the "usage fee" plan would unfairly hurt local businesses.
