Food donations needed after the holidays

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--With the unemployment rate still above eight percent here in Washington many families will need to rely on donated food for their holiday meals.

Northwest Harvest helps feed well over 35,000 families a month and volunteers said that number has been growing consistently for the past four years.

With the holiday season right around the corner, Northwest Harvest Warehouse Manager, Lisa Hall, said demand from food banks will pick up. But at the same time, more groups and charities are helping out as well.

Hall said the real need comes in the months after the holidays. Food banks struggle during January, February, and March when people are generally the most dependent but donations drop off.

"Everybody is kind of like well I gave at the holiday time, and yet that's when the big heating bills start coming in and bills from Christmas and there's not as much work," Hall said.

Northwest Harvest ships out around 450,000 pounds of food a month to 50 local food banks.

NBC Right Now will be hosting our annual family food drive on December 1st. You can drop off donations at our Kennewick and Yakima studios.
