YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima School District permanently closed a part of Seventh Avenue Tuesday, as construction starts on Davis High School.
The road is blocked between Walnut and Spruce Streets, and another section between Pine and Spruce is now one way.
The district is closing the roads to create an outside area for students to walk around in.
They said it's just the first step in a long construction project.
"It's finally started, we're anxious, we're excited, we want to see that first hole dug and it will be coming up within the week," said Jim Wright with the Yakima School District.
Contractors hope to start work on the new math and science lab at Davis this week. They will remodel the school in phases so students can still use the building. They expect to finish in 2015.
