Benton City family needs support for badly burned son

BENTON CITY, Wash. -- A Benton City family is reaching out to the community after their five year old son suffered severe burns on much of his body.

Five year old Kase Warner has first, second and third degree burns on 26 percent of his body. He is currently on a respirator and doctors in Seattle estimate it could be two months before Kase is let out of the burn unit at Harbor View Medical Center.

His mother Gina Warner told NBC Right Now her son is going to have to undergo skin graft surgeries on his stomach and back where the worst of the injuries happened. Otherwise Kase does have burns all over his body, including his thighs, legs and face.

On November 3rd Kase, his three year old brother Kie and his father Dan were in their Benton City back yard when a gas can his dad was holding exploded, lighting the boy's clothes on fire. His father, Dan Warner, is an army veteran and immediately jumped into action.

"Danny ran over and rolled him, which is what you're supposed to do, put him out, cut his clothes off, and put him in the cold shower so that saved a lot of the burns," said Barry Orth, the Commissioner for Benton County Fire District 2.

Gina Warner says the family is staying in a temporary apartment thanks to a charity organization, but they only have it until November 19th.

"Something like this is a tragedy for anybody, but when it's a child, it makes it ten times worse. You know I hear stories about this happening to other people but you don't ever think its going to happen to you," Warner said on the phone.

Family and friends have organized a spaghetti feed fundraiser this Saturday November 17th from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at St. John's Lutheran Church Christian Growth Center, located at 1000 Irma Lane in Benton City,

Asking donations are $5 per person or $15 for a family of four, cash or check only.

We can only take cash or checks. Friends have also set up an account in Kase Warner's name at HAPO Community Credit Union.
