Prepare your home for flooding

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, Wash.,  - Winter storms are the third-largest cause of property loss in America, resulting in about $1.3 billion in insured losses annually, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Some common winter weather damage such as burst pipes, wind damage, ice dams, frozen gutters are insured in a standard Homeowners Insurance and Business Owners policies. However, flooding is not part of insurance plans.

Here are some tips to help you prevent flood damage.

Learn to maintain your gutters to prevent melting water from falling into your attic, trim trees and remove dead branches because they have the potential of falling on your car or home.

Check insulation, maintain pipes and know where they are located and how to turn off your water.

Also, keep your household temperature at least 65-degrees to keep pipes from freezing.
