RICHLAND, Wash., -- Soldiers overseas will soon receive a sweet treat from local children.
'Operation Cash for Candy' concluded today as veterans from 'Operation Thank You' picked up Halloween candy collected at area dentist offices.
The idea is simple - kids donate candy and get a dollar per pound.
'Operation Thank You' will ship care packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Children that donated are also entered into a drawing for Toys R Us gift cards and other prizes.
"The purpose of the candy in the troops' hands is, as we understand, to use it to get information from the locals in the war zone as to where dangerous explosives are and where the operations are," says Dr. Lee Ostler. "So it's actually put to good use."
'Operation Thank You' estimates they'll send off more than one thousand pounds of candy this year.
