Yakima, WASH.--Some people are decorating their homes for the holidays even before Thanksgiving now, but you'll want to be careful about what lights you're using, especially on your Christmas tree.
The U.S. Fire Administration reports around 240 home fires start with Christmas trees, and another 150 house fires involve other holiday light decorations.
Workers at Home Depot said a lot of customers are using outdoor lights indoors, and that's a huge safety hazard.
They said the best kind of lights to use on your tree are LED lights. They last longer, don't produce as much heat and use less electricity.
Of course, there are other safety precautions you need to take when it comes to your tree.
"If you're ever leaving a home you want to make sure they're unplugged because all that heat with the trees, especially the ones that are real if you're not keeping up with the water they can dry off and real easy to ignite," said Miguel Blancas, a worker at Home Depot.
Home Depot has other safety equipment for the holidays, including fire extinguishers that you can keep right in your kitchen while you're cooking your turkey. They also have talking fire alarms that tell you how much smoke or carbon monoxide is in the room.
