DAYTON, Wash. - You won't find any Black Friday craziness at the annual Christmas Kickoff in Dayton Washington the day after Thanksgiving. Instead, maybe call it Green Friday.
The theme of Dayton's holiday this year, is "The Town that Still Believes," showcasing the city's commitment to renewable energy. Pacific Power and its Blue Sky customers are "greening" Dayton's holiday lights in Flour Mill Park and on Main Street by supporting renewable energy equal to the total electricity used to power the holiday lights.
This year's greening supports 12 megawatt hours of western region wind energy, which energy officials tell us has the same environmental benefit as planting 176 trees or not driving a car 15,182 miles.
The Christmas Kickoff also includes the lighting of Main Street, a live production of "Annie" at the Liberty Theater, pictures with Santa, hay rides, caroling, a lighted parade and a Christmas market at the state's oldest train depot in downtown Dayton.
The first night of the celebration ends with a fireworks display, sponsored by Pacific Power. Nearly 100 Dayton area customers support Blue Sky while 15 Dayton businesses are Blue Sky partners, including: Banner Bank, Boldman House Museum, City of Dayton, Columbia County Government, Columbia County Grain Growers, Columbia County Rural District, Crofts Floral & Gifts, Dayton Chamber of Commerce, Dayton Historical Depot, Dayton Mercantile, Dayton Veterinary, Port of Columbia, State Farm Insurance, Sterling Savings Bank, and Weinhard café.
If you or your business would like to enroll in Blue Sky, it is voluntary, and your participation level can change at any time. Sign up by calling Pacific Power at 800-769-3717 or by visiting www.pacificpower.net/bluesky.
