RICHLAND, Wash. -- Thanksgiving means many have a day off work and a lot of traffic on the roads. The supervisor of the Richland Traffic Unit, Cpl. Scott Morrell says to be careful doing your last minute grocery shopping and during Black Friday.
According to Nationwide Insurance, 13% of auto accidents take place in parking lots. Morrell says police will spend a lot time in parking lots near the holidays so use your judgement.
"You need to slow down, there's nothing inside that store that's worth running over somebody for. It's always going to be there, but we can't put people back together if you run over them. So you need to slow down and pay a lot of attention to the people that are out walking," Morrell said.
Morrell also says, busy shopping days are often an opportunity for thieves. Lock your car, don't leave your purse or gifts in plain sight.
