Protesters demand more pay and respect for Walmart workers

Yakima, WASH.--For Walmart workers in more than a hundred cities, Black Friday was not about ringing up shoppers. It was about protesting the company's practices.

In Central Washington, there was not a ton of protest activity except for a few protesters outside a Yakima Walmart.

Protesters said Walmart keeps their employees on a low salary to keep its consumer prices down. Therefore, they're forced to rely on government medical benefits and food stamps.

"They've got them trapped by the fact that the scheduling practices, they've got them where it's difficult for them to acquire a second job," said Theresa Petrey. "It's difficult for them to move up the ladder quickly to a higher tier of pay."

Local protesters said they hope their actions will bring awareness to the community, and encourage workers to fight for more hours, more pay and more respect.
