Thousands lose power due to birds

TOPPENISH, Wash.-- More than 7,000 homes and businesses in the Lower Valley lost power for several hours Monday.

A Pacific Power spokesperson says people in Toppenish, Zillah, and Sunnyside lost power around 8:30, Monday morning. They believe birds damaged some equipment inside a substation.

In Toppenish, most businesses had to close their doors because of the outage.

"We were closed Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. And so usually Monday after the holiday we're really really busy and we cannot help any customers at all," said Cori Samples, owner of Toppenish License Agency.

Pacific Power was able to restore service to the majority of their customers by 2:30, Monday afternoon. About 300 people were still without power as of 5pm.
