Spike in Honda thefts in the Tri-Cities

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Hondas have long been at the top of the most stolen cars list and recently there's been a rash of Honda thefts here locally.

Just yesterday, two Hondas were stolen in Kennewick and two more were taken in Pasco over the weekend.

Pasco Police said that out of the ten car thefts they investigated this month, six of them were Hondas.

Police said they find many of the cars abandoned somewhere and stripped for their parts.

Hondas are popular cars, so the demand for the parts are high and sometimes more profitable than the used car itself.

"The parts just by themselves are worth a lot more than the sum of the vehicle. It's not like somebody's joy riding in these. They're actually stripping them down for economic gain," said Mike Blatman, Kennewick Police Department.

The most popular Hondas to steal are Honda Civics and Accords from the mid-90's through the early 2000's.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported this year that the 1994 Honda Accord is the most stolen car for the fourth year in a row.

So if you own a Honda, police recommend you be extra careful to always lock it and park in a safe location.
