MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: Reassure Children of Their Safety

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH. - In Yakima, mental health professionals said they've been getting phone calls from many concerned parents.

They're all asking the same question, how do I talk to my kids about the shooting?

Jim Pinnell, the Education Coordinator at Comprehensive Mental Health said it's important to keep reassuring your kids that this didn't happen here. Small children are likely to be scared because they don't understand what they're seeing on the television.

"Keep reminding your children that they really are safe, they really are safe," said Pinnell. "Try to keep as much routine as you can in the family, especially if you have smaller children."

Comprehensive Mental Health offers crisis services 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The center also offers parenting classes if you need help handling your child's behavior. A new session will start in January.
