HERMISTON, Ore. - A fire continues to smolder after destroying nearly $1 million worth of hay at a Hermiston business.
Firefighters say the blaze started with one bale of hay at Pacific Ag Solutions and the winds quickly spread the flames. Investigators believe the fire started in chopping machinery as it was processing a bale of hay.
Firefighters say if the hay was consolidated from separate stacks, it would have formed a mass about 25 feet high, 300 feet long, and 150 feet wide. They say the fire could be seen from miles away.
Besides the hay, damages were estimated around $500,000 in galvanized steel hay sheds, tools, and about 40 large tractor tires.
