WEST RICHLAND, Wash. - A local elementary school is giving back a big way this holiday season. In return for all their hard work, Wiley Elementary students got to throw pies at some of their teachers Friday.
Seven staffers got a face full. To encourage kids to donate, staffers agreed to take one pie to the face for every 200 pounds of food. In total, the kids collected more than 1,400 pounds for local food banks.
"The character trait for the last month has been compassion so our students really understand it's not about us, it's about giving to others around us and helping out others in need. For our students that really means a lot because they know what others are going without," said Principal Marc Nelson.
Wiley Elementary also held a penny drive. They rounded up nearly $900 worth of pennies that they're sending to the Rockaway Wish Foundation out of New York to help Hurricane Sandy victims.
