Man Dies After Being Stunned with Taser at Benton County Jail

RICHLAND, Wash. - A 29-year-old man is dead after being stunned with a taser at the Benton County Jail.

Kevin T. Culp of Spokane died Tuesday in the hospital. He was in jail as a contract inmate for the State Department of Corrections.

The Benton County Coroner said in a statement that an autopsy would be performed Wednesday.

Authorities said Culp had a medical condition and was watched by jail nurses in an isolation cell. They said Culp had an "unknown medical episode" on Dec 17 when he became combative, struggled with officers, and bit them.

Officers shocked him with a taser, put him into a restraint chair, and moved him to a different isolation cell that allowed for closer observation.

Staff later discovered Culp was unresponsive and called paramedics. Authorities said an independent investigation will be conducted.
