YAKIMA, Wash.-- If you're planning to do some digging around your house, new rules are going into effect next year.
Previously, people had to call in before they started their project and have crews mark underground utilities.
Now, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission said people planning to dig have to outline the area they want to dig up in white paint.
"Helps save time and miscommunication. Sometimes it's hard to describe the area that you plan on digging over the phone to an operator," said Anna Gill with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.
Fines against people who don't call before they dig have gone up as well.
Previously, the state fined people a thousand dollars for each violation. Now, that number can go up to five thousand.
If you plan to dig on your property, you are required to call 8-1-1 two business days before digging.
