Fewer Drunk Drivers on New Year's Eve

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Law enforcement patrols were out all over the Tri-Cities and Yakima for New Year's Eve, and DUI numbers are down.

Just in the Tri-Cities, the number of arrests totaled up to nine. Richland Police arrested four, Pasco, West Richland, Benton County and West Richland each made one arrest. Washington State Patrol made two arrests out of their Kennewick office, and the Kennewick Police Department had no arrests for the first time in five years.

Corporal Todd Dronen says they were out and made 42 traffic stops but no one they stopped was driving drunk.

"It could be the night of the week, designated drivers, taxi services, all of the above contribute to a low DUI arrests," Dronen said.

Washington State Patrol said they made 12 arrests alone in the area; two in the Tri-Cities, nine in Yakima and one in Sunnyside.
