MABTON, Wash.-- An 82-year-old woman badly burned in a house fire in Mabton has died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Germana Aguilar sustained serious burns to about 60% of her body. But, friends and neighbors were hoping she'd pull through.
Joe Pina has lived a couple of doors down from Germana and Marcelino Aguilar for the last 20 years. He says they've always been great neighbors and couldn't believe the news of Germana's passing.
"I hate to hear that. Especially friends, you know," Pina said.
"They were a really nice couple. We used to go to church together," said longtime friend Jose Meza.
The fire broke out around 9 o'clock, Tuesday morning.
When crews arrived the home was fully engulfed, an elderly couple outside, both badly burned.
"She was all scared mostly, you know? And all burned up. She had burns," Pina said.
Firefighters say the woman's 81-year-old husband helped pull her out of the burning home. No surprise to Meza, a longtime friend of the couple.
"Knowing Marcelino and how he was always, you can see her care, his love for her. That won't surprise me that he did as much as he could to get her out," Meza said.
Half a dozen other cars passed by the burned down house Wednesday, all wanting to know if the couple was okay, and saddened to hear of her passing.
"Nice people. This is a big loss. It's just terrible," Pina said.
"She was always singing to the Lord you know, praises. And she loved to do that," Meza said.
The Yakima County Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of this deadly blaze, which they say could take some time to determine.
Marcelino Aguilar is in stable condition, but does have serious third degree burns on his hands, arms and head.
