Pendleton School Receives Grant to Support Kindergarten Readiness

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, Wash. - The Oregon Community Foundation awards Sherwood Heights Elementary School a $5,000 grant to help lead a community-wide effort to help ensure that all Pendleton children arrive in kindergarten ready to learn.

The grant program, called the P-3 Learning Community has an emphasis on pre-school through 3rd grade learning.

The grant partners with Project Ready to Learn to plan an effort to provide transition programs, early childhood training and parent education programs in Pendleton to prepare children for kindergarten.

Sherwood Principal, Shelley Liscom, is leading the grant effort and says the program aims to extend these skills and services district-wide.

The Pendleton School District began the process during the 2011-2012 school year, when teachers were involved in Umatilla County's effort to create and implement a Kindergarten Readiness Program.
