OLYMPIA, Wash.-- The Washington State Department of Transportation is considering a new plan that would charge drivers "by the mile" to use state roads.
The department recently concluded that moving to a pay-as-you-go fee system was a feasible plan.
It's one of the ideas they're considering to possibly replace the gas tax.
Thanks to fewer people driving and more fuel-efficient cars on the road, the department now has less money to maintain and fix the state's road system.
The commission may ask for more money from lawmakers to further study the idea.
