What Did I Just See In the NFL?

Posted: Updated:

What a weekend of football in the NFL.  Let me begin by saying the Seahawks are going to be a good team for a long time.  More on that game in a moment. I watched the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens game on Saturday, and like most was absolutely baffled by what happened.  Can someone tell me how in the world you let a wide receiver behind the defense in that situation?  Denver was up by a touchdown with :40 seconds left and Baltimore was out of timeouts.  So what happens? Joe Flacco hits Jacoby Jones for a 70 yard touchdown over the top of the defense to tie the game. What happened next is almost as mysterious to me.

Tie game with :31 seconds and Denver has the ball with 2 timeouts I believe. Instead of trusting in a quarterback by the name of PEYTON MANNING to try and lead his team into field goal range, (oh and by the way…Denver's kicker Matt Prater has a leg capable of making 60 yarders) the Broncos TAKE A KNEE to get it to overtime! Are you kidding me! Now I'm not a fan of either team (I'm a Redskins fan) but if I'm a Denver fan I would be livid! Let me ask you this- do you think the Ravens defense would have rather the Broncos try and move into field goal range, or watch Manning take a knee?  If you answered the latter, then my point is made!  Of course Baltimore would go on to win in 2 overtimes, and the great Peyton Manning (who I think is one of the best QB's of all-time) falls short in the playoffs once again.

Now to the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons game.  Down 13-0 in the first half, the Seahawks had an opportunity to get points on the board with a chip-shot field goal.  Instead of taking the 3—‘Hawks head coach Pete Carroll decides to go for it on 4th down. It doesn't work, Atlanta gets the ball and eventually scores a touchdown of their own to make it 20-0. Seattle would also blow a chance at a field goal to end the half…not good.

The second half was a completely different story.  Russell Wilson set a Seahawks playoff record throwing for 385 yards.  He tossed 2 touchdowns, and also ran for one.  He is absolutely the real deal, and Seahawk fans should be thrilled he is their man for many years.  After taking a 28-27 lead with :31 seconds left, it appeared the ‘Hawks would be booking a ticket to San Francisco and a rematch with the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.  But there was still :31 seconds left!!! Don't forget to play defense Seattle!!! They did forget and Atlanta's Matt Ryan set his kicker Matt Bryant up to kick the game winning 49 yard field goal.  Did I mention he missed it the first time? But Carroll had called a timeout to "ICE" the kicker….ugh.

Bottom line—great games with  questionable decisions, but hey…isn't that what makes sports great? My prediction—New England beats San Francisco in the Super Bowl 28-24.

This lengthy build-up leads me to one sincere question: Did the 2001 season doom the Seattle Mariners franchise? If the M's had won the World Series that year, would we be talking about a dynasty? Out of the Park Baseball 15 allows baseball fans to answer that question.
