Fatal Train vs. Pedestrian Accident Near Wapato Blocking Road

WAPATO, Wash. - A 19-year-old man has been struck and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train in Wapato.
    
The man was hit Monday afternoon.  BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said the victim was trespassing on railroad property. The crew of the empty, eastbound grain train spotted the individual and sounded horns to try to alert him and also applied emergency brakes.
    
Melonas says local, tribal, state and county officials are involved in the investigation.
    
The spokesman says this is the third fatality on BNSF tracks in January.

WAPATO, Wash. -- We're getting word about a fatal accident involving a train and a pedestrian in Yakima County.

The sheriff's office says one person on foot was killed on North Track Road along Highway 97 in Wapato around 2:30.

North Track Road is blocked off. Tribal Police are investigating.
