BLOG: Mom Loses Bet, Teaches Her Son a Lesson

I came into the office Tuesday, checked the latest developments on social media and couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry. Right on the SWX Facebook wall was a picture posted by a mom who lost a friendly bet – with her son.

The mom posted a picture of her son's winnings: a picture of her standing outside a Spokane-area grocery store holding a sign that said "I was wrong, my son was right. Seattle sucks. Falcons rock." And in parenthesis was the simple explanation: "I lost a bet."

It reminded me of the tough love-style punishments you see every once in a while on the news and on the Internet. You know, the ones featuring a kid holding a sign that says he did something wrong. A couple of things struck me immediately about this amusing situation.

My first thought was to congratulate the parent for sticking to her end of the deal. Hopefully it teaches her son something. Hopefully it teaches him to be honest and keep a commitment, even when keeping that commitment is embarrassing or difficult.

But then I thought again. Does he really believe the Seahawks suck?

We'll see who wins the bet next season. I'm betting the son will be in front of the grocery store next year. Just don't ask me to stand in front of a store with a sign in my hand if it doesn't happen!
