Who and what is Make-A-Wish Washington

Make-A-Wish® Alaska and Washington's mission is simple and clear. We do one thing: grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Since 1986, our local chapter has granted unparalleled wishes to more than 5,100 children in our communities. Our organization is an independent chapter of Make-A-Wish, the premier wish-granting organization for children.

Although it has become one of the world's most well-known charities, Make-A-Wish has maintained the grassroots fulfillment of its mission. More than 500 volunteers make our work possible in our communities.

We grant a wish to every eligible child referred to our chapter who lives in Alaska or Washington, but there are many more who qualify. Right now, for every child who receives the life-affirming gift of a wish experience, there is another child we are still trying to reach. This is a problem we can solve and donations of frequent flier miles will help us stretch our dollars and get a step closer to this vision.

Why are wishes important:

Make-A-Wish® America commissioned a national survey by the TCC Group, a respected consulting firm with extensive experience in developing strategies and programs to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in order to achieve social impact. The goal was to gain a better understanding of the effects of a wish come true. The results were astounding:

  • A combined 89 percent of nurses, doctors, social workers and child life specialists surveyed say they believe that the wish experience can influence wish children's physical health. They noted that wish kids are more willing to comply with difficult, but vital treatment.
  • 97 percent of wish families and 96 percent of health professionals observe increases in wish children's emotional health. Many parents noted the wish experience marked a turning point in their child's response to treatment. Children feel empowered to take back control of their lives, and to keep up the fight against their life-threatening medical conditions.
  •  99 percent of parents reported that the wish experience gave their children increased feelings of happiness. Parents observed a decrease in their children's sadness, anxiety and fear.
  • 98 percent of parents felt the wish experience gave them the opportunity to be a normal family again. Parents say their family units – often strained to the limit by stresses of the life-threatening medical condition – are repaired and strengthened through the shared experience of the wish process.

Our need for miles is great!:

  • Our goal today is to raise 2,000,000 miles to send kids on the trip of a lifetime, whether that's Disneyland, San Diego, Hawaii or another destination.
  • Last year alone, our local Make-A-Wish chapter used nearly 6,080,000 miles from all airline carriers to send local wish kids on the vacations of their dreams. That equates to about 152 tickets and an approximate cost savings of about $68,400.
  •  Last year, our local Make-A-Wish chapter used 4,240,000 Alaska Airlines miles alone for wishes.  That equates to about 106 tickets and a cost savings of about $47,700.
  • Last year, about (22 wish families were able to travel for their wish using donated Alaska Airlines miles.
  • If your miles are expiring, donate them to Make-A-Wish!  Once transferred, they will not expire for the organization.
  • Donating your frequent flyer miles doesn't cost you a dime!
  • 70% of wishes are travel-related.
  • Using airlines miles to send families on their wish trips is the number one way we are able to stretch our donated dollars.
