County Settles Workplace Injury Lawsuit for Over $1-Million

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash.-- Yakima County officials have agreed to a more than $1-million settlement for a worker injured after falling through the roof of a county owned water tower.

NBC Right Now covered the accident back in 2010 when Michael Hansen fell 40 feet down the Terrace Heights tower, fracturing his back and spine, and puncturing a lung.

"Workers should not be exposed to unnecessary risks. Any employer who has a situation that results in that kind of risk should be held accountable," said Vito de la Cruz, an attorney with Tamaki Law.

De la Cruz says Hansen is still recovering from some of his injuries and is hopeful this lawsuit will alert others to the importance of maintaining a safe workplace.
