Cars Reported Stolen, Often Civil Issue

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Kennewick Police recently recovered a car reported stolen in Des Moines, Washington.

But police say it turned out to be a civil issue and a situation that's all too common.

A man reported his car stolen when it was gone for a week and it turns out his girlfriend took it without telling him.

Police consider this an issue between the couple and not actually a stolen car.

"Most people when they borrow a car, seems like they return it within a day or two. To the owner that's too long of course, so they want to report it stolen when it's just a civil issue because they let their friend borrow it."

Noble said lots people report stolen cars that end up being just a civil issue.

The woman who took this particular car was briefly booked into the Benton County Jail before being released. The prosecuting attorney will look into pressing charges, if any.
