Chiefs Beat Winterhawks in Shootout, 5-4

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Chiefs stormed out to a 3-0 lead against the first-place Winterhawks, only to see Portland erupt for three goals in the third period and force overtime, before winning in a shootout, 5-4.  The win gives Spokane it's 30th win of the season, while Portland fails to beat the Chiefs for a second time this week.

Adam De Champlain opened up the scoring at 16:30 in the first period as Portland took a 1-0 lead.  But less than a minute later, Dylan Walchuk netted his 14th goal on the year to draw the game even at 1-1.  Brenden Kichton followed suit with a go-ahead goal, his 16th on the season, as Spokane took the lead, 2-1.  Adam Helewka would go on to score two goals for the Chiefs as Spokane took a 4-2 lead late in the third period.  But Ty Rattie's 22nd and 23rd goals for Portland pulled the Winterhawks even at 4-4 and force overtime.

Neither team scored in the first overtime, highlighting a stellar effort from Spokane netminder Eric Williams, who stopped 41 Winterhawk shots.  He stopped all three of Portland's shots in the shootout, while Kichton provided the game-winner.  The Chiefs and Winterhawks go head-to-head for a third and final time this week, Friday at 7:05 pm at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
