Local Republican Congressman Votes "Yes" on Debt Ceiling Measure

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Republican controlled House of Representatives passed short term legislation this week to raise the nation's debt ceiling, preventing what could have been a huge economic crisis.

Until Wednesday, Republicans had been demanding spending cuts for every dollar President Obama wanted to raise the debt ceiling.

4th-District Republican Congressman Doc Hastings voted yes on the legislation. We caught up with him Thursday to get his thoughts on the move.

"We felt that the most important thing was to make sure that the federal government pays their debts, and so we had to get that issue somewhat behind us. We still have a spending problem in this country and we're going to have to address that," Hastings said.

Hastings says the new legislation also requires the Senate to pass its first budget in three years, or face a pay freeze.

A more permanent solution to the debt ceiling will have to come by May. That plan will likely include spending cuts.
