WA Bystander Fires to Scare Man Threatening Woman

Posted: Updated:

EVERETT, Wash. - Everett Police Officers say Wednesday afternoon a bystander fired a shot into the air to scare a man chasing a woman and threatening her with a knife.

Officers say the suspect stopped chasing the woman and was detained by several other people until police arrived and arrested him for unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon. Police say the woman ran away.

Officers say the suspect and victim had been involved in a domestic dispute.

The 61-year-old man from Arlington who fired his pistol told police he had ordered the man with the knife to stop chasing the woman. Fearing for her safety, the man says he fired one shot. Officers say they do not expect to pursue any charges against him.
