Video Inspection of Second Double-Shell Tank at Hanford Finds No Leaks

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Video inspection of the annulus of another double-shell tank in Hanford's tank farm did not find any indication of waste leaking from the primary tank shell.

The inspection of double-shell tank AZ-101 was finished last week. This the second double-shell tank inspection since a leak was found in double-shell tank AY-102 last October.

After tests on AY-101, officials confirmed the waste leaking from AY-102 was radioactive, but it was only getting into the 30-inch space between the tank's two shells, not the environment.

The leak in AY-102 prompted officials to video inspect six other tanks with similar construction and operating histories.

Video inspection of AY-101 was finished earlier last month and was found to have no problems either.

Project Manager Del Scott says they are now inspecting double-shell tank SY-103. That inspection should be completed sometime next week.

Inspections are done by Base Operation workers who lower video camera into the risers to determine if any waste has leaked from the primary tank into the annulus.
