Washington's Apple Crop sets Record High

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - About 55% of Washington's record 2012 apple crop has been shipped, according to the Washington Growers Clearing House as apples are being sold at a record price.

Assistant manager Dan Kelly says growers are getting good prices because of last year's poor crops in other apple-growing regions of the country.

A 40 lb. box of apples is selling for more than $26, compared to $23 last year and $20 two years ago.

Favorable weather last year helped Washington produce a record crop of 130 million boxes. Growers say they have enough apples in storage to keep grocery stores supplied through the rest of the year.
