NBCRightNow.com - Federal regulators plan to launch a national crackdown on unsafe tour bus operators and will try to strengthen oversight of the industry after several fatal accidents.
The Federal Motor Carrier Administration said Thursday that teams of investigators will focus on bus companies with a history of problems in safety.
Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood met with bus industry officials and safety advocates also on Thursday to discuss how the government may weed on unsafe operators.
Nine people were killed and 38 others hurt when a bus crashed in Pendleton right before New Year's. Eight others were killed after a tour bus crash in southern California earlier this month. Both bus companies have been shut down for safety violations.
