Salem Humane Society on Two Week Quarantine for Puppy Influenza

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ore. - It's influenza season... but not just for humans.

A two-week quarantine has been implemented at the Willamette Humane Society shelter in Salem after veterinarians there found three suspected cases of canine influenza.

The cases appeared in a litter of puppies that arrived at the shelter on February 1 and were later adopted.

In most cases an affected dog will have only a mild form of the disease. A small percentage, however, may develop a severe case of pneumonia.

Canine influenza does not pose a risk to humans or cats.
