Seattle Installs 30 Surveillance Cameras on Waterfront

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, Wash. -  Seattle's waterfront now has 30 surveillance cameras installed to help with security, but Mayor Mike McGinn said the cameras won't be turned on until the public has a say.

Police had hoped to start using the cameras, which were paid for through a $5 million federal Homeland Security grant, by the end of March. The mayor has directed police to get public input and talk to community groups before moving forward with the cameras.

Last week, the mayor ordered the police department to abandon its plan to use drones after residents and privacy advocates protested.
