YAKIMA, Wash. - One of the oldest buildings in Yakima could become the newest hot spot for tourists. The City says they want to turn the Great Western building at 4th and East Yakima Avenue into a 38-room boutique hotel.
The building is currently owned by Jem Development and city council will vote Tuesday night whether or not to hire a nonprofit organization to help the company qualify for a million dollar federal loan.
Hiring the national development council costs $60,000 but Yakima's Economic Development Manager says the organization is beneficial to making sure all the documentation for the loan is filled out correctly.
The City says turning one of Yakima's most historic buildings into a special hotel could do wonders for tourism.
"When you look at that building we've lost a lot here locally as far as our historic structure so the opportunity to develop a property like that is really a once in a lifetime and will help us build and add to our downtown in a way that's very unique to us," said Economic Development Manager, Sean Hawkins.
Hawkins says the building was built in the early 1900s. It has been used as a retail store, a place to house a winery, and several law firms.
The City says turning it into a hotel now could allow visitors and locals a chance to see the architecture and the Masonic temple on the top floor.
