YAKIMA, Wash.-- Farm employers from
around the state flocked to the Yakima Convention Center today for the Washington
Farm Labor Association's 9th Annual Labor Conference.
The event helps to educate farmers who
hire laborers about a number of human resource and labor issues.
Bishop Joseph Tyson with the Yakima Diocese
also gave a speech about immigration reform.
It's a major topic for farm employers.
Organizers say nearly 70 percent of
seasonal workers are likely using fake documents.
"Our iconic crop is apples, and it
looks like the value of that crop is gonna be over three billion dollars. The
crop isn't worth anything unless it gets picked," said Farm Labor
Association Director Dan Fazio.
Speakers also focused on issues like the
new healthcare law, harassment, and best hiring practices.
