Mariners Drop Cactus League Opener to padres, 9-3

PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners allowed a six-run first, and San Diego tacked on a three-spot in the ninth, as Seattle dropped its Cactus League opener 9-3 in front of 5,495 fans at Peoria Stadium. Between the first inning and the ninth, seven Seattle relievers combined to toss 7.1 shutout innings.

 

Proceeds from today's 20th Annual Charity Game will be donated to the Peoria Diamond Club. This annual charity game has allowed the Peoria Diamond Club to distribute nearly $1,300,000 in grants over the past 20 years. The children's groups they serve and have funded include special needs, under privileged, educational, leadership, athletic programs and more. Proceeds were distributed today to several local charities, including: Teen Lifeline, Peoria Police Officer Association, Peoria Baseball Sluggers Booster Club, Partners of Arrowhead Hospital, Glendale & Peoria Family YMCA and Phoenix Rescue Mission.

 

The Mariners scored one run in the 6th as Francisco Martinez led off with a double and came around to score. Casper Wells hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th deep to left field for Seattle's other runs. 

 

Seattle starter Hector Noesi (0-1) took the loss. He was charged with 6 runs, 4 earned, in 2/3 of an inning pitched. Oliver Perez (1.1 IP), D.J. Mitchell (1.0 IP), Andrew Carraway (1.0 IP), Chance Ruffin (1.0 IP), Logan Bawcom (1.0 IP), Anthony Fernandez (1.0 IP) and Brian Moran (1.0 IP) followed and combined for 7.1 innings of shutout, two-hit ball. Danny Farquar allowed three runs in the 9th inning.

 

The Mariners (0-1) and Padres (1-0) return to Cactus League play tomorrow (Saturday, February 23) at 12:05 PT/1:05 MT at Peoria Stadium. The game will be broadcast in the Seattle area on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Right-handed pitcher Blake Beavan is scheduled to start for the Mariners against Padres right-hander Tyson Ross.
