Students Present Mock Trial in Front of Real Benton County Judge

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Local high school students got a glimpse of what it's like to be a lawyer Saturday by taking what they've learned to court.

The YMCA Mock Trial Competition was held at the Benton County Justice Center in Kennewick Saturday.

The event lets students present a case for trial in front of a real judge. The jury was made up of attorneys that rated the teams' presentations.

"Really solidified what my plans for the future are. It's something I really want to do and it's given me a really in depth look," said Danielle North, student participant.

"Gives them the opportunity to get real hands on experience in how their government works, in what issues are going on in their communities and how they can be involved in solving those issues," said Sarah Clinton, Executive Director of YMCA Mock Trial.

The mock trial gave students feedback from professionals and an opportunity to act out the proceedings of the court.

The district's winning teams will compete in the state championship in Olympia next month.
