RICHLAND, Wash.-- High school students enthusiastic about science got together at WSU Tri-Cities Saturday to show off their smarts.

The Department of Energy hosted the Regional High School Science Bowl where teens competed to answer questions on a range of topics from chemistry to space science.

The competition is designed to encourage kids to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematic education and careers.

"Our goal is to inspire students to pursue a career in math and science to help with the global problems that are coming and are science oriented," said Beth Perry, competition coordinator.

Students from 24 teams across southeastern Washington and Oregon took part Saturday.

Top projects could win a spot at the national finals in Washington D.C. in April.
