Mrs. Obama's surprise appearance -- via satellite -- came at the end of the show when she helped announce the Best Picture Oscar winner - "Argo."

According to a spokesperson for the First Lady, the appearance happened after the FLOTUS was contacted by the Academy.

"The Academy Awards approached the First Lady about being a part of the ceremony," the spokesperson told Access read. "As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all -- especially our young people -- with their passion, skill and imagination."

Mrs. Obama had been attending the National Governors Association Dinner at the White House and left the event to present the award
