Coalition Files Legal Action over WA Charter Law

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, Wash. - A coalition of community groups and educators filed a legal challenge Wednesday, questioning the constitutionality of Washington's new charter schools law.

The "legal demand" asks Washington's attorney general to look into seven constitutional issues with the new law.
For example, opponents do not like the way the law would divert public school money to support private non-profit organizations.
The group says the believe the new law also violates requirements that the superintendent of public instruction supervise everything related to public schools.
The coalition says if the attorney general does not respond, they plan to file a lawsuit in state courts.
