Boys 2B
Wahkiakum vs. Colfax
Wahkiakum dug itself an early hole in its opening-round
matchup with Winlock, but used a 13-2 run following halftime to take a lead it
would not relinquish. Similarly, Colfax started slow. The Bulldogs didn't run
into much trouble with their opponent, though, as LaConner also struggled to
get going offensively.
Players to watch
Colfax: Montana signee Brandon Gfeller led Colfax with 14
points on Thursday, but didn't really make his presence known. Look for him to
get better looks.
Wahkiakum: Shane Souvenir hit two big 3-pointers for the
Mules that quelled a late Winlock run. If this game goes down to the wire, the
junior has shown the ability to hit a big shot.
Lind-Ritzville-Sprague vs. St. George's
Missed free throws almost cost Lind-Ritzville-Sprague its
game on Thursday against Northwest Christian, but a late 3-pointer from Dylan
Hartz saved the day. St. George's also played a close affair, but it was a much
more taxing game, one that went into overtime. Both games were played early in
the afternoon on Thursday, but fatigue could still be an issue.
Players to watch
Lind-Ritzville-Sprague: Dylan Hartz was the guilty party at
the charity stripe late in Thursday's game, but he also hit a big 3-pointer.
His teammates say the quarterback of the state champion Eagles football team
thrives in the spotlight.
St. George's: It took Dexter Sienko almost three-quarters of
Thursday's game to get going, but the dominant 6-foot-6 junior carried the
Dragons down the stretch in an absolutely dominating late-game performance. If
Sienko gets going early, Lind-Ritzville-Sprague could be in trouble.
Boys 1B
Sunnyside Christian vs.
Pomeroy
Sunnyside Christian had no problem with Columbia Adventist
and showed the ability to get points from multiple players. Pomeroy played a
bit of a closer game against Christian Faith, but similarly, was led by a
balanced scoring attack.
Players to watch
Sunnyside Christian: Brian Broersma was a very efficient 7-of-12 on Thursday and grabbed
six rebounds. The 6-foot-5 sophomore should have a tougher test against a
bigger Pomeroy frontcourt.
Pomeroy: The Pirates'
frontcourt of Riley Bolt and Cody LaMunyan combined for 37 points and 20
rebounds on Thursday. Another big game from the pair of 6-foot-6 forwards,
could produce a trip to the finals.
LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus vs. Neah Bay
Both teams rolled to comfortable victories in their
respective openers on Thursday, with Neah Bay using a 21-3 fourth quarter to
cruise to the victory.
Players to watch
LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus: Jed Zimmer scored 10 points for the Tigercats, despite shooting
just 3-of-13 from the field. If the center, who also had 10 rebounds, is more
efficient, he could play a big role.
Neah Bay: Neah Bay doesn't have a big team and could be outmatched on
the inside. Another 4-of-10 shooting performance from 3-point land by Tyler
McCaulley could help make that a moot fact. An even better percentage could
make the difference.
Girls 2B
Morton-White Pass vs. Reardan
Morton-White Pass had scoring contributions from just three
players on Thursday, but somehow eked out a 35-31 victory. The Timberwolves may
have more trouble with a Reardan team that made its opening-round game nothing
more than a warmup in a thrashing of White Swan.
Players to watch
Morton-White Pass: Not only did Lina Hieronymi have a third of the
Timberwolves' points, but also almost a quarter of the teams rebounds. Another
balanced game from Hieronymi would go a long way.
Reardan: Kelsey Moos is the player to watch in the game. The Arizona
State signee didn't have to put forth much effort in the opening-round game and
should be plenty rested as the Indians look to three-peat.
Northwest Christian vs. Pe Ell
Northwest Christian will once again have the advantage of
the home crowd. The Crusaders will be facing a Pe Ell team that barely escaped
with a win against Onalaska on Thursday.
Players to watch
Northwest Christian: Courtney Gray was an extremely efficient 5-of-6 from the
field on Thursday. With balanced lineup that saw four players reach
double-digits, Gray could get a lot more than six attempts if the defense has
to concentrate on other players.
Pe Ell: The Trojans only had scoring contributions from four
players, but one of them was Sami Robinson, who dropped 19. Add in Robinson's
seven boards and you get Pe Ell's most dominant player on Thursday.
Girls 1B
Pateros vs. Sunnyside Christian
Both teams rolled through their first game without much
trouble. Pateros struggled from the field, shooting just 30.9 percent, while
Sunnyside Christian did much better, hitting 46.7 percent of its attempts.
Players to watch
Pateros: Lorie LeDoux was big on the glass with six offensive
rebounds. If the Nannies continue to struggle from the field, LeDoux could come
up huge by extending possessions.
Sunnyside Christian: Annie Brouwer led the Knights with 17 points on an efficient
7-of-12 shooting. Is another big game in store for Brouwer?
Wilbur-Creston vs. Colton
Wilbur-Creston had to exude a lot of energy in order to
complete its fourth-quarter comeback, while Colton coasted to its 77-15 win.
Players to watch
Wilbur-Creston: Jessica Boyer had a big day for the Wildcats, scoring 19
points on 8-of-18 shooting.
Colton: Colton received plenty of contributions in its big win, but
Jackie Warner provided a big boost with 13 points and nine rebounds. Watch her
to see if the Wildcats can get another well-rounded game from the junior.
