City of Yakima Looking at Forming Airport Department

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima continues to move forward with plans to take over management of the Yakima Airport.

The city council is expected to vote Tuesday night on forming an airport department within the city.

The city and county had previously run the airport together, but the county gave control back to the city earlier this year.

If the city moves forward with the department, they'll need to figure out how to structure it, and hire a director.

"I would always liked to have seen it... A private firm manage the airport.. But, barring that... I think it's a good thing the city's taken over the airport and separated it from the county," says Yakima City Councilman Rick Ensey.

The city hopes increased control over the airport will allow them to improve services.

This is one of several topics the city council will discuss at their meeting Tuesday night. It starts at six in city hall.
