Bill To Add New Judge In Benton and Franklin Counties Making Progress

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. - A bill that would add another Superior Court judge in Benton and Franklin Counties is making progress in Olympia. Local representatives Brad Klippert and Larry Haler sponsored the legislation bill.

The bill passed the house Wednesday. Now it's on its way through the senate hearing process where it will be taken to the floor, eventually voted on and then hopefully will land on the governor's desk for his signature.

Representative Larry Haler said the Tri-Cities are widely considered one of the few economic bright spots left in the state and that growth drove the need for another judicial position.

"Whether it's civil cases or whether it's criminal cases, those kinds of things occur with population growth and so it's been well received," Haler said.

This bill also says the additional judge will be paid for out of county funds without reimbursement from the state.

A companion bill, proposing the same thing, passed the Senate last week so there's a strong chance that getting a new judge in Benton and Franklin Counties will soon be a reality.
