SURPRISE & PHOENIX, Ariz. Second baseman Stefen Romero went 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 12-2 split-squad victory over the Kansas City Royals Thursday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. Across the valley in Phoenix, the other half of the Mariners were defeated 7-3 by the A's in Cactus League play.

After having their 10-game win streak snapped yesterday, the Mariners are now 11-3 in Cactus League play. With four more home runs today (3 vs. KC, 1 vs. OAK) the Mariners have combined to hit 30 home runs in 14 games, surpassing spring totals from 2012 (28 HR in 26 G), 2011 (27 HR in 31 G) and 2010 (23 HR in 32 G).

In Surprise, Romero led the Mariners offensive barrage against the previously unbeaten Royals (11-1-1). The Mariners 2012 Minor League Player of the Year finished a triple short of the cycle, and hit a grand slam (4th inning), 3-run home run (9th inning) and also doubled for 11 total bases.

Felix Hernandez made his spring debut allowing one run in 2.0 innings (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 SO). Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (1-0) followed Hernandez and earned the win allowing one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings, facing one batter over the minimum.

Left fielder Casper Wells (2x5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and catcher Kelly Shoppach (2x3, R, 2B) added multi-hit games.

At Phoenix Municipal, right-hander Brandon Maurer (1-1) took the loss despite working 3.0 solid innings in his start. After allowing back-to-back singles to open the game he retired eight straight A's before two singles sandwiched around a walk with two outs in the third plated the first run of the game for the A's. Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman worked the final 3.0 innings, allowing just a solo HR to Andy Parrino. He faced just one batter over the minimum in his outing, thanks to a double-play ball to end the eighth (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 SO).

The Mariners scored a pair of runs in the sixth on singles from Kendrys Morales, Mike Zunino, Brad Miller and an RBI fielder's choice by Vinnie Catricala. Robert Andino (#1) hit a solo homer in the seventh, his first of the spring, to cap the Seattle scoring.

All nine starters in the Mariners lineup recorded at least one hit, but only Andino (2x4) and Morales (2x4) tallied multi-hit games as Seattle totaled 11 hits.

Today's game vs. the Royals will be replayed tonight on the radio on 710 ESPN Seattle at 7 p.m. PT.

The Mariners (11-3) return to Cactus League play tomorrow with a home game against the Oakland Athletics (6-6) at Peoria Stadium (12:05 PT/1:05 MT). Right-hander Hector Noesi (0-1, 14.73) is scheduled to make his second spring start (4th appearance) against A's right-hander A.J. Griffin (1-0, 1.80). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 710 Seattle and Mariners.com (for subscribers to MLB.tv).
