No Tolerance Policy for threats of violence at Finley Schools

Posted: Updated:

FINLEY, Wash. -- A 13 year old girl is in a lot of trouble after administrators found a "death list" at Finley Middle School Thursday. School officials say the girl was immediately expelled and sent to the Benton County Juvenile Detention Center.

The school district says the list had about 50 names on, made of students and teachers. Benton County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Lusignan who also works as a school resource officer at Finley Schools says she is facing felony harassment charges. He said shortly after the incident, school officials contacted everyone on the death list personally.

The punishment may seem severe to some, but Lusignan said there has to be a "no tolerance" policy toward violence or the threat of it. "We don't want to slip. We don't want something that's happened at other schools. Even though they're emergency expelled, if for some reason that may not have been the appropriate response, there's opportunities to appeal and things like that," he said.

Lusignan said in this case, some of the students on the list say they don't even know the girl. "They don't believe there was a real element of truth in her threats towards those children and towards those teacher," he said.

"It's always going to be better safe than sorry because its their job, its our job and it's the community expectation that when our children go to school, as parents we expect them to be safe"
